When to double down in blackjack

Understand the extra stake, the one-card limit and the fallback when doubling is not allowed.

What doubling changes

In a conventional double-down action, you add an amount equal to the original bet and take one final card. You give up the option to keep hitting. This is why a double recommendation is not the same as a confident prediction that the next card will be favorable.

Two default-rule examples

With the default S17 rules, hard 11 against a dealer 6 is a double. Hard 11 against an ace is a hit; switch the dealer to H17 and that cell becomes double if allowed. These are starting-hand recommendations, not instructions to double after already drawing several cards.

Double if allowed, otherwise what?

Dh falls back to hit. Ds falls back to stand. The distinction matters for soft totals: blindly treating every double cell as a hit can create an error. The tool includes the fallback in the result explanation.

Double after split is a separate rule

DAS controls whether a newly formed split hand can double. It also affects some initial pair decisions. The tool’s DAS setting changes the pair lookup, but this edition does not simulate a whole split round or resplitting sequence.
